| The
island of Martha's Vineyard lies seven miles south of the Massachusetts
coast, just off Cape Cod. The ferry from the mainland is a quick 45-minute
ride across Nantucket Sound to the island.
The "Vineyard" is approximately 23 miles
long and 9 miles wide at it's widest point and is roughly 100 square
miles. We are roughly twice the size of Nantucket and three times
the size of Manhattan; however we only have 14,500 year round residents
compared to the 7.5 million of New York City. In the summer, our
peak season, our daily population can go as high as 120,000.
Once
on the island you'll find something for everyone. In the "Down
Island" section of the island, you will find the bustling year-round
harbor town of Vineyard Haven. The town of Oak Bluffs is a fun and
eclectic town, great for the young or young at heart. Edgartown,
the islands original settlement and county seat, is home to the
stately sea captains' homes from a time gone by and quaint shops
to tempt your wallet in addition to a harbor that is considered
one of the most picturesque in the country.
In the western section of the island known as "Up
Island," you will find beautiful terrain that at times resembles
the back roads of Vermont with a flavor of the sea. In Aquinnah,
you will see the world famous cliffs of Gay Head while Chilmark
is home to Menemsha, the quaint fishing village where time seems
to stand still. West Tisbury houses the farmers' market, the Grange
Hall, and numerous shops and art galleries.
Our island is a unique and magical place in more ways
than one. Our people are as warm and inviting as our beautiful beaches,
and our sunsets are out of this world. You'll learn to appreciate
the fact that there is a certain mind set that comes with being
on an island at sea. When one steps on the Vineyard, there is a
sense of yesteryear with the conveniences of today.
Martha's Vineyard truly does have something
for everyone and you are sure to find a special place to treasure
and call your own.
